Where does your business stand with AI?
A simple ladder with seven levels, from not started to a business that runs and improves on its own. Find the level you are on today, and see what the next one looks like.
Two minutes, three steps.
Most advice about AI jumps straight to the impressive part. This ladder does the opposite: it shows where you stand, and the one step that makes sense next.
Each one is a plain yes or no about how your business works today. No preparation needed.
Every yes takes you one level higher. The first no shows the level you are on right now.
You get your level, what it means in practice, and the one step that would move you up.
Tools like ChatGPT or Claude, and the systems a business builds around them: saved instructions, automations, connected software.
Many owners use AI a lot themselves while the business has barely started. Both are normal. This check is about what keeps working when you are not the one doing it.
Find your level.
Answer for how the business runs today, not how you plan for it to run. If you are unsure, choose no.
Answer for the level you live at, not the one you talk about.
From not started to running on its own.
Open any level to see what it looks like, the signs you would recognise, the question to ask yourself, and the step that comes next.
The right level is the one your business and your life actually need.
Rented, or owned.
From level 4 on, a second question matters as much as the level itself: who does all of this belong to? Renting is fine for trying things. It becomes a risk once the business depends on it.
Your instructions, your knowledge and your workflows live inside someone else’s tool or one person’s account.
- A price change, a new model or a closed account can break it overnight.
- When the person who set it up leaves, it leaves with them.
- You cannot easily take it with you to a better tool.
Your knowledge, instructions and data sit somewhere you control, written down in a form people can read.
- You can switch AI tools without starting over.
- New people get up to speed from the same source.
- The value you build keeps growing inside your business.
Three things to keep in mind.
Each level builds on the one below. Skipping usually means paying twice. The right next step is one you can see working within a few weeks.
The right level is the one your business and your life actually need. For many small businesses, level 4 or 5 is the finish line.
From level 4 on, your knowledge and systems should belong to you. If a supplier can switch it off, you are renting your own business.
What people usually ask.

Bring your level to the conversation.
Knowing your level means the first conversation starts in the right place: one level up, with something small you can see working on your own business.
